Summery: In Gouverneur, New York two white girls ages 10 and 11 were involved with assault. The 10 year old was charged with a second degree harassment and the 11 year old was charged with assault and a third degree hate crime. The victim was African-American, after the incident she was seen with a black eye, bruised knees and hair had been pulled out of the victim. The attack happened around September 10 when the parents of the victim reported this problem. The case was then taken into juvenile court as the girls were referred to St. Lawrence County Probation for further action.

Reaction: I believe this case should be further looked into in order to figure out the motive of the attack as to if this is related to a hate crime or not. There is not enough provided information to tell.

History Connection: This issue is connected to history because of the hate crimes against African Americans. As an example during 1954-1968 The Civil Rights movement was created to prevent these racial discrimination acts. Such as the incident with Little Rock Nine in 1957.

  1. Ryan, nice post. You bring a good point in not assuming this was a hate crime...yet. We need more information, namely the motive for the why the crime was committed. I can only speculate (and hope) that the motive was something that concerns 10 and 11 year olds, like candy or social jealousy. I'm not sure if it's a hate crime or not; I need facts.

  2. The school might react by talking with the parents of the attackers to understand why they did such a thing. Their motive was probably due to hatred towards blacks, although to find the real cause, the kids need to speak for themselves. I believe this was a hate crime because the attack was specifically directed to a child of color.

  3. This crime should not be a hate crime they are little kids that get in a fight. They should not be charging children with crimes just by fighting. We do not know what the issue was over so we cannot label this a hate crime

  4. The school should investigate further into this incident before declaring it a hate crime since the motivation behind this assault remained unknown. The school should start by communicating with the three girls that were involved. I personally believed that it was a hate crime since the victim was African American and the attackers belonged to the white race.

  5. I think that the school should be looking further into the incident because as the problem did occur on what could be called school property, they are responsible for anything that happens to their students. To some people, this might be a hate crime knowing what races were a factor of the intendent, while others might think that it was just a random act of bullying.

  6. I agree with you. The article doesn't offer enough information to determine whether the assault was racist or not. It might just so happen that the victim was black. Either way, it is still assault. It might also have to do with how the white girl was brought up.

  7. I agre with you they are not much evidence nor it says the reason it happened also they are young and it shoulnt be this big of a deal.

  8. The school should create more effective ways to deal with this solution. The children are very young, and the description of the conflict go as far as a school fight which has been punished in more peaceful ways.

  9. I think that the school is responsible for any actions at that school, but I also believe there is not enough evidence in this situation. And I believe the children are too young to be charged with such a big crime.

  10. i believe that the issue should be looked into more and make sure that there were probable cause due to the girls actions. in my opinion i believe there motive was due to them having race discrimination towards the girls race. in my opinion i think that there really isn't no saying weather it is a hate crime or not if there is not enough evidence towards the girls and the African american but i do believe the girls deserve some sort of punishment due to them hurting another child.

  11. The school will most likely talk to the parents and children to ask why they did what they did. I do not know what the motive was for the girls to do the hate crimes, but I also believe there isn't enough information to judge what really happened. I do believe this is a hate crime because the acts were towards a child of color, but we cannot know for sure.

  13. I don't not believe this is hate crime, because we don't have information the provides proof if this was a hate crime. The two little girls are too young to even understand if it was a hate crime.

  14. There is not enough information given to declare the motive. Hate crime or not, this is unexceptable and bullying should not be tolerated.
