Summary/Reaction: Donald Trump had recently announced that his administration will ban flavored e-cigarettes due to the huge number of vaping-related deaths. Trump told reporters that vaping was a “new problem” in society today which had highly affected children and young teenagers. The U.S. Health Secretary Alex Azar said that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is also coming up with a plan to ban all non-tobacco flavors. In the past, 33 states had already reported six deaths and 450 cases of lung illness that was linked to vaping. Among the 450 cases that were reported, the majority of victims were young adults with an average age of 19. Michigan had already taken the first step to be the first state in the United States to ban flavored e-cigarettes. My reaction to the article was negative. Knowing the consequences of vaping is addiction, I believe that the banning of flavored e-cigarettes might bring some hope into our society by slowly taking the step to lessening the harmful products that are being sold in markets.

Connection to US History: This current event connects back to the Harrison Narcotics Act that was passed in 1914 becoming the United States’ first federal drug policy. It had restricted the manufacture and sale of cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and morphine.

Question(s): Many people vape because of peer pressure, a method of coping with stress or maybe just out of curiosity. What can we do to prevent the current and future generations from vaping/consuming other drugs?

  1. I think that it is important to raise awareness about the negative effects of vaping to prevent future generations from vaping. With the news about teens dying or being hospitalized, I believe that it is helping many teens realize how serious and dangerous vaping can be. Because vaping has not been researched very throughly, many people believed it was safer or not harmful, however with the new studies, people are now starting to understand how dangerous it can really be, and can help them to stop vaping.

    1. I agree with you. I believe that spreading awareness and getting the words out can better inform others how vaping can damage not just a person's body but also their brain severely. Schools should also educate their students about the consequences of vaping since many of the victims are young teens. I believe that many will not cope with stress through vaping as long as they know that they can seek treatments.

  2. I think to help prevent future generations from vaping/consuming other drugs, we need to show the consequences to help show how harmful it is. BY seeing the effects and how it harmed other teens, it might scare off future generations. It would also be helpful if studies could clarify what exactly the consequences are, and not say "may lead to." It is very misleading.

  3. To prevent the current and future generations from vaping/consuming other drugs, I believe that people need to be informed of the negative health effects caused by the use drugs. It seems that even though we have health classes and programs that tell students of the dangers of drugs, some students still continue to use them. Teens need a stronger influence to change their opinions such as laws that further limit the use if drugs.

  4. I don't think Trump truly understand the problem here. Banning e-cigarettes will lead to more switches to tobacco cigarettes. The problem isn't the drug, but how often a person may use it. Regulations over banning the product can lead to a better result.

  5. For once I actually agree with Trump. Vaping is a big problem, and banning the sale of them is a good thing. Despite this, it won't stop people from getting juuls illegally and may cause people to switch to actual smoking. In short, banning the sale of flavoured e-cigarettes won't be enough to stop the epidemic that is vaping, but it is a good start.

  8. Just like in the past with the ban of cocaine people did not know how bad it was for you. Vaping could be the same. I am glad trump is planning on banning vaping and e flavored ciggarets.

  9. I agree, with the reoccurring death and illness caused from vaping, banning vape is the right thing to do. Though banning something doesn't mean you can assure everyone will stop doing it. By raising awareness of the harm, it will encourage people to stop vape use. - natalia rosales

  10. To stop future generations from vaping, I believe that the first step is to ban flavored E-cigs, and teaching kids about the long term effects.

  11. In order for one to stop vaping, people who are willing to quite, need to cut off from the supply that they are getting completely. This can correlate with most addictive products let it be vape, heroin, cocaine, etc.`

  12. I agree with trumps comments that this is a new problem and that it needs to be taken care of. I believe the biggest problems with these companies is that there advertising attracts both adults and kids. I believe another problem is that kids don’t have enough information of what e cigs can do to ur body every time they use. There needs to be more informational talks at schools just online in general, because this is a new generation thing. I believe that the e cigs companies need to advertise what they are actually putting in there products and show the cause it has on you. I think that this won’t stop the problem completely but will make kids think harder about the right think to do in a situation of being pear pressured to smoke an e cig.

  15. I agree with Trump because e-cigarettes have done a lot of harm in the US. Removing this product can save people and it will also stop people from using it. If we don't remove flavored e-cigarette then the next generation will start to become addict and we will have more deaths.

  17. I agree with Trump because e-cigarettes are a big issue in the u.s. If he tries to ban them, there is a chance to stop it majorly although it might not be 100% preventable. Taking action is a step to change and effect the amount of those who use e-cigarettes. -rayn
