Summary: On September 6, 2018 An ex-Dallas police officer Amber Guyger shot her neighbor Bothanm Jean. Guyger is charged with killing Botham Jean, her 26 year old African American neighbor, in his own apartment while she was off duty. Dallas police officer Amber Guyger entered Jean's apartment, which she said she mistakenly thought it was hers, and shot him as he watched TV on the couch. Botham was unarmed in the incident when it occurred. Guyger was found guilty of murder on October 1, 2019. The murder conviction carries a sentence of up to life in prison.

Reaction: I agree with the sentencing of life in prison for Amber Guyger. She killed an innocent man for her own mistake. His family deserves justice for Botham Jean.

Connection: The 2nd amendment states ‘’A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” This ex-police officer was armed with a firearm off duty and shot and killed an unarmed innocent man in his own apartment. This relates to the 2nd amendment because having the right to bear arms needs more regulated laws and a more strict background check.

Questions:

Do you think Guyger was under the influence of something which caused her to go in the wrong apartment?

Was the killing of Botham Jean an example of hate crime?

Does Guyger deserve her sentencing?

    1. I agree with you that his family deserves justice but I believe it wasn't a hate crime. I believe she could of handled the situation way different and just got scared but it was 100 percent her fault and deserves the consequences.

  2. i think that Guyger knew exactly what she was doing. She deserves life in prison because she took an innocent mans life for her being "mistaken"

  3. I think that Guyger was not under the influence. She probably genuinely thought that she entered her own apartment, and she killed Jean out of fear. It was not a hate crime. Obviously, Guyger deserves her sentencing since what she did was capital crime and it was already settled in court.

  4. I believe this is a hate crime she killed a man for no apparent reason. I dont think she was under the influence because she had to have broken in to get inside. She deserves life in prison

  5. I believe that Guyger was not under the influence and that the killing of Botham Jean was a hate crime. Yes she might've thought that Jean broke into her apartment but she had no reason to shoot Jean since Guyger was not being attacked or using self defense. Yes I agree that she deserves her sentencing because what she did was her own mistake.

  6. I agree with Erica, I dont think that she was under the influence, however there was no reason to shoot him because it wasnt being violent or a threat. I also believe that she should be faced with life in prison

  7. This was clearly an accident. No one should be put away for life for an accident. The family forgave her. She should spend time, but not life.
