Federal Workers’ Children Born Abroad May Not Receive Automatic Citizenship

Federal Workers’ Children Born Abroad May Not Receive Automatic Citizenship

Summary/Reaction: The Trump Administration has recently come up with an attempt to keep illegal immigrants out of the US. Children of US military service members who aren’t born on US soil are no longer guaranteed automatic citizenship. This new policy is mainly aimed at military families who have not been in the US in years, yet does not affect families with one parent who is a US citizen and has lived in the US for over 5 years. Although they do not receive automatic citizenship, they are still able to apply for citizenship. This policy is set to apply on October 29, and will affect any child born after. I believe that this policy is wrong and that the children of US military parents should be granted automatic citizenship. Military families are worried about other things, and wondering if their child is a US citizen should not be one of them. If the parents are citizens and their child is not born on US soil, then their child should still be qualified for automatic citizenship because the parents (or parent) is a US citizen.

Historic Connection: I connected this article to Proposition 187 in California(1995). Proposition 187 took away education, welfare, and health sources from immigrants in California, although it never officially became a law. Similar to this, the US is taking away guaranteed citizenship from the children of US military parents to limit legal immigration

Discussion Question: After all US service members have done for our country, do you think that this policy is fair?

  1. I definitely agree with your opinion on this new policy. It is incredibly unfair, people who serve in the military should be granted many more aids to help their family. We shouldn't be making it harder for families who have a member in the military we should be making it easier for them by granting their children with automatic citizenship and other perks such as free education. These are little things that make a big difference to these families.

  2. I agree with your opinion on this policy. Military men fight for our country they deserve more aids to help their family. We should do a lot more in helping them with money and housing benefits when they return. These are things that can make a big differance on the return after the war

  4. I very much agree with your thoughts about this new immigration policy. The children of citizens should always be citizens themselves as well. Their parents are contributing to the well being of our country and having to do this to this is very unjust. -Cindy Serafin

  5. i agree with you point. I think the right things is to grant them citizenship for they are fighting for the country risking their life. They are helping a country which is not theirs and i think that should be like a thank from the cuntry to those who dont have citizenship

  6. I believe this isn't the right thing to do. I believe and agree with your opinion of how this is "unjust". Those who fight for the U.S should be able to have rights for their children to become citizens as they fight for their country.

  7. In my opinion this is very unfair. Military service members go out and risk their lives, fighting for a country that is trying to deny their children citizenship.

  8. This is not fair the people in the military are risking their life by fighing for a country they were not born in which should be rewarded with citizenship for their family as a thank you for helping a country they are not from and protecting they country

  9. I agree that this policy is completely unfair and that the children of US military parents should still be allowed automatic citizenship. After everything these military parents do to protect our country, they should not have to endure this unjust law.
